Basic Function:
Worcester Polytechnic Institute's (WPI) Teacher Preparation Program is seeking part-time adjunct faculty to act as Program/Project Supervisors for semester- long student practica in secondary math and/or science. This part-time faculty position is created to provide an available applicant pool for the program. Positions will be filled on an as needed basis. Start dates are dependent on the semester.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Act as a WPI Project Advisor
    1. Oversee and advise student teaching practica as either a students Independent Qualifying Project (IQP) or Independent Study.
    (IQP: a project-based learning opportunity that allows students to solve a problem or need that lies at the intersection of science and society.)
  • Act as a Program Supervisor
    1. Supervise a student teacher using the Department of Elementary and Secondary Educations (DESE) Candidate Assessment of Performance (CAP) system.
    2. During the semester-long practicum, this includes:
    a. on average 3-5 classroom observations and formal evaluations of student teacher
    b. pre-observation phone calls/meetings
    c. debrief observation meetings
    d. evidence collection and analysis including lesson plans and student work reviews
    e. formative and summative evaluations
    f. individual plans and increased observations for struggling students
    g. student teacher and supervising practitioner check-ins
  • Act as a Coach
    1. Support and advise supervising practitioners on best practices of mentoring and evaluating as needed.
    (Supervising practitioners are the licensed educators sharing their classroom with the student teacher.)
    2. Train supervising practitioners on areas that include:
    a. Candidate Assessment of Performance (CAP)
    b. best practices in evidence collection
    c. communicating feedback to student teachers
  • Report to the director of the Teacher Preparation Program.
  • Work a minimum of 50 hours per student teacher per semester.
  • Can act as program supervisor for up to three student teachers per semester.

    Position Requirements

  • At least a BA in a STEM field with a masters in content area and/or education (or related field); PhD preferred.
  • At least 5 years of teaching experience with some experience in a mentoring role;
    a. Program supervisors overseeing math practicums must have math teaching experience in grades 6-12.
    b. Program supervisors overseeing science practicums must have science teaching experience in grades 6-12.
  • Collaborative and reflective/responsive to feedback.
  • Demonstrated best practices teaching MA Science, Technology and Science and/or Common Core math standards (or their equivalents) as well as best practices in pedagogy in STEM teaching in grades 5-12.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Have or have had at least an Initial Massachusetts teaching license, preferably in grades 5-12 STEM.
  • Work to ensure continuity throughout the Teacher Preparation Program and develop/implement practicum requirements collectively with the Teacher Prep team.
