Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Doctoral degree (or foreign equivalent) in Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, or Counseling (Ph.D., Psy.D., or Ed.D.) from an APA-accredited program or CACREP-accredited program. Ten (10) years of clinical experience in the mental health field. Four (4) years of leadership experience in behavioral healthcare management. Experience directing the work of clinical and operations areas in implementation of program services.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience successfully managing multiple behavioral health programs. Experience with health promotion, disease prevention, sexual violence, and alcohol and other drugs. Experience with best practices in school-based mental health supports and a variety of levels of prevention and intervention. Experience with leadership and/or project organizational skills (planning, implementing, evaluating). Experience working with diverse populations.

Brief Description of Duties:
The Executive Director of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and Behavioral Health reports directly to the Assistant Vice President of Student Health, Wellness, and Prevention Services, and is responsible for the planning, management, and oversight of student behavioral health services on the West, East, and Southampton campuses. The position plays a key role in aligning behavioral health care with a focus on improving the quality of treatment and service delivery as well as overall care coordination. The Executive Director identifies and evaluates core challenges by assessing critical delivery system variables and providing strategic and visionary foresight. The Executive Director establishes and directs strategic priorities for behavioral health that align with the University's strategic plan. The Executive Director is a member of the Student Affairs leadership team, working with the Center for Prevention and Outreach (CPO), Student Accessibility Support Center (SASC), Recreation and Wellness (RAW), Student Health Services (SHS) Directors, and others to support the Student Affairs health, safety, and wellness strategic priority. The Executive Director successfully develops and nurtures coordination among campus departments, divisions, medical staff leadership, faculty, and other related services. This position requires a broad knowledge of the behavioral health care system and strong leadership skills. The position also requires extensive experience overseeing and guiding team members involved in crisis intervention for a broad range of presenting problems and constituencies. The Executive Director directly supervises and evaluates employees, resolves problems, and leads an effective, inclusive, diverse, and interdisciplinary team.
  • Strategic Leadership
    • Develops and manages all department budgets and participates in procurement and monitoring processes. Participates in proposal development and new project development by joining planning and workgroups. Operationalizes project objectives in collaboration with Medical, Public Health, Development, Government Relations, Finance and Grants/Contracts. Participates in statewide associations and participates in behavioral health care network development. Serves on a variety of committees as appropriate. Knowledge of postsecondary student growth and challenges is essential to this position. In addition, the incumbent demonstrates the capacity to deal with students in crisis and psychological emergencies. Establishes and provides direction for new service and program development initiatives. Demonstrates a willingness and flexibility to explore and implement new delivery of care models.
    • The incumbent ensures that behavioral health services are used effectively and that quality goals and objectives are met. That information is analyzed and used to establish and support a care framework. Plans, initiates and maintains quality standards for college behavioral health treatment and integrated behavioral health treatment and services with immediate access to care. Maintains and improves the image of college mental health in our campus community and state and national organizations. Provides input and feedback on marketing initiatives to identify and break down stigmas and harmful social norms.Provides leadership for staff education programs, administrative/staff meetings, and in-services and encourages all team members to continue their education and professional development. Establishes realistic expectations, objectives, and goals. Ensures timely, suitable, and competent delivery of high-quality services to students. Will work to cultivate a team-based, healthy workplace culture focused on providing patient-centered care. Analyzes policies, procedures, and administrative guidelines affecting behavioral health and develops new guidance as appropriate. Proactively seeks and secures funding for mental health supports through grants, collaborations, MOUs, and partnerships.
  • Advocacy and Support
    • Establishes and oversees the implementation of new quality improvement and quality assurance initiatives for the department's programs and services. Collaborates with the AVP assuring that appropriate protocols for continuous improvement are established for the department's clinical and non-clinical services. Monitors ongoing compliance with quality assurance and best practice standards. Assures the integrity and continuity of departmental services as the University further develops telehealth. Monitors and reports key quality improvement indicators. Develops and promotes a public health care system based on high-reliability safety concepts and processes such as suicide prevention. Ensures that any issues or shortcomings discovered during internal or external surveys are addressed and corrected. Risks to students' health and safety are identified and reported accordingly. Ascertain that systems are in place to ensure that programs comply with relevant licensing and accrediting requirements.
    • Adheres to policies and procedures and HIPAA/FERPA, Compliance Programs, and Code of Conduct and Ethics. Ensure all services rendered are documented in electronic case records as required by the agency, licensing, and by funding sources; ensure all departments under the incumbents purview are compliant with all regulations, laws, policies, and procedures.
  • Inclusive Campus Climate
    • Foster a welcoming and inclusive campus climate for all students during their initial transition to college and throughout their Stony Brook experience. Relate positively to students from a wide variety of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Anticipate and respond effectively to students' needs, including matters involving students' rights and responsibilities. Work with institutional leadership to ensure that policies and procedures align to support diversity, equity, and inclusion. Develop and maintain close working relationships with academic departments particularly Psychology, Social Welfare and Psychiatry.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such may be required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are canceled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.

Evening and weekend work will be required at times.
