Open Rank Tenure Faculty Biobehavioral Health

The Department of Biobehavioral Health (BBH) in the College of Health and Human Development (HHD) at The Pennsylvania State University, invites applications for an open rank tenure line faculty position focusing on the science of caring and compassion and its impact on human biology, health and well-being to begin as early as Fall 2022. Our preference is for candidates at the advanced Assistant Professor level or Associate Professor levels. This position is accompanied by an endowed appointment, appropriate to the rank and experience of the candidate. Research in this area focusing on care and compassion may include, but is not limited to, formal and informal caregiving, mindfulness and compassion, relationships across the life course, prosocial behaviors, social support and belonging, health equity, and/or research on factors that offset or mitigate the psychosocial, physiological, or neurobehavioral impacts of negative interpersonal processes. We are particularly interested in individuals whose research fits within the department's interdisciplinary focus on integrating psychosocial, biological, and contextual processes. We welcome applicants who use novel and integrative approaches across a range of biological, psychological, and behavioral data, including (but not limited to) neuroimaging/fMRI, endocrinology/immunology, ecological momentary assessment, ambulatory sensors, physiological markers, qualitative approaches, and/or cutting-edge statistical approaches.

The College of Health and Human Development strongly encourages applicants who would enrich the diversity of our academic community to apply. To learn more about Penn State University's commitment to diversity and inclusion see the University's Statement on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at http://equity.psu.edu/psu-diversity-statement. As an institution, we embrace individual uniqueness, foster a culture of inclusion that supports both broad and specific diversity initiatives, leverages the educational and institutional benefits of diversity, and engages all individuals to help them thrive. We value inclusion as a core strength and an essential element of our public service mission. In HHD enriching the lives of others is our mission. We believe in the power of human capacity for growth and live that mission by meeting challenges, both big and small, with excitement and energy every day. As a part of this, we enthusiastically support both broad and specific diversity initiatives with varied strategies (including via Penn State's offices for Educational Equity and Affirmative Action and HHD's office for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) to maximize the chance that persons with unique abilities, interests, strengths, and needs can thrive at Penn State.

This position will build on the existing strength of the department's expertise in interdisciplinary research on how diverse factors interact to influence health and well-being. Departmental research examines substantive areas in which biology and behavior are inextricably interconnected (e.g., stress, psychoneuroimmunology, mental health, and sleep), issues related to chronic disease (including addiction, obesity, pain, cardiovascular disease, and cancer), as well as pertinent areas of scholarship that provide important windows into those aspects of health such as ethics, genetics and epigenetics, neuroscience, prevention science, health disparities, public health, innovative methods, and translational science. Department faculty are highly research active, transdisciplinary, and collaborative. Areas of interest germane to health that are likely to promote and enhance collaborative interdisciplinary research within the department will be viewed as a strength.

Applicants must demonstrate excellence in research, a strong publication record, interest in collaboration across disciplines, commitment to mentoring students or early career researchers, and a track record of or strong potential for external grant funding, with excellent potential to carry forward such research and funding. Responsibilities of this position include continuing a fundable line of interdisciplinary biobehavioral health research, teaching graduate and undergraduate courses, supervising and mentoring student researchers, and providing service to the Department, College, and University. A doctorate in social and behavioral science, psychology, biology, neuroscience, sociology, public health, or a related field is required.

Penn State offers a resource-rich and inspiring higher learning environment with significant opportunity to collaborate with researchers in the department and many other units across the University, including a growing number of researchers focused on compassion and caring. Numerous University-wide units, such as the Social Science Research Institute, the Edna Bennett Pierce Prevention Research Center, Center for Healthy Aging, Huck Institutes for the Life Sciences, and the Clinical Translational Science Institute offer intellectual hubs to build interdisciplinary teams and internal funding opportunities. Other relevant resources include a Biomarker Core Lab and the Social, Life, and Engineering Imaging Center. In addition to salary and a start-up package, Penn State offers excellent benefits, including medical, dental, retirement, and tuition benefits.

Applications received by October 15, 2021 will be given full consideration, but applications will continue to be reviewed until the position is filled. To be considered for the position, applicants must complete an online application and upload: a cover letter (which specifically addresses the job requirements and outlines qualifications), curriculum vitae, a research statement, a teaching statement, three (3) reprints or preprints that convey research interests and expertise, provide evidence, either woven through their application materials, or as a separate diversity statement, of a commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusive excellence, and the names of four (4) professional references who will be providing letters. We will request reference letters, with a short timeframe for response, only for applicants undergoing further consideration.
